game jam post mortem
I'm going to make this brief since I ...want to.
I started out this game jam with an idea for a phone call that kept happening over and over, based on a poem I wrote like 15 years ago during my degree. I build the menu and then looped it, and then started thinking about gameplay.
And then I got very sick with an allergic reaction to a medication I had started taking. I spent a few days trying to get better, but then refocused and tried to at least come up with something.
Originally, I wasn't looking to write a narrative story, but unfortunately due to lack of time, it's kind of how I swung. I still have something in me that leans toward story telling, for reasons.
I drew all the images, made some simple drone music, and did a lot of testing to see if the changes worked. The hardest part was figuring out the ending.
I'm not 100% sure if I like what I made. I think it's a story, and I think I challenged myself a lot, but it's made me want to move away from working in Ren'Py. I've already been struggling against it for a while, and I think I'm going to try looking at other engines, starting with RPG Maker. I felt like RPG Maker was too hard at first, but now that I have a lot more experience, and the knowledge that assets exist and I don't have to do anything from scratch if I don't want to, I want to try again.
